ABSTRACT
This study explores the environmental factors influencing indecent behaviors among public secondary school students, focusing on the roles of family dynamics, peer relationships, school environments, and community influences. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected from 370 students, 50 teachers, 30 parents, and 10 community leaders through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings reveal that poor parental monitoring, low socioeconomic status, negative peer pressure, inadequate school policies, and exposure to community violence significantly contribute to indecent behaviors. Urban students were more susceptible to peer influence and substance abuse, while rural students faced challenges related to limited community programs.
Quantitative data analysis showed strong correlations between these environmental factors and behavioral outcomes, while qualitative insights highlighted recurring themes such as family dysfunction, social media misuse, and lack of mentorship. Visualizations, including charts and word clouds, emphasized the prevalence of these issues.
The study concludes that addressing indecent behaviors requires a multi-faceted approach involving families, schools, communities, and policymakers. Recommendations include strengthening parental education, improving school infrastructure, enforcing effective disciplinary policies, and implementing community-based mentorship programs. By addressing these factors, stakeholders can create a supportive environment that promotes positive behaviors among students. The research contributes valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers seeking to understand and mitigate behavioral issues in secondary schools.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Education plays a critical role in shaping individuals and building societies. Secondary education, in particular, serves as a bridge between primary education and higher learning, equipping students with knowledge, skills, and values to prepare them for adulthood. However, schools are not isolated from the broader societal influences that affect student behavior. In recent times, the increasing prevalence of indecent behaviors among public secondary school students has become a concern for educators, parents, and policymakers.
Indecent behaviors, such as truancy, bullying, substance abuse, sexual misconduct, and other forms of delinquency, disrupt the academic and social environment of schools. These behaviors not only hinder academic performance but also compromise the moral and ethical development of students. Environmental factors, both within and outside the school, significantly contribute to these behaviors.
The school environment, family background, peer influence, and community settings all shape the behavioral patterns of students. For instance, a dysfunctional family structure, lack of parental supervision, peer pressure, and exposure to media promoting negative values can increase the likelihood of students engaging in indecent behaviors. Similarly, overcrowded classrooms, inadequate facilities, and ineffective disciplinary measures within schools can exacerbate the problem.
This study seeks to explore the environmental factors influencing indecent behaviors among public secondary school students. Understanding these factors is crucial for developing effective strategies to curb such behaviors and foster a conducive learning environment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Indecent behaviors among public secondary school students have become a widespread issue, affecting both academic performance and societal values. Schools often report cases of vandalism, drug abuse, sexual harassment, and other misconduct, leading to disruptions in the learning process. Despite efforts by educators and policymakers, these behaviors persist, raising questions about the underlying causes.
Environmental factors, including family dynamics, peer influence, socio-economic conditions, and school policies, play a significant role in shaping student behavior. However, there is limited research on how these factors specifically influence indecent behaviors in public secondary schools. Without addressing these root causes, interventions may remain ineffective, and the problem may escalate.
This study aims to identify and analyze the environmental factors contributing to indecent behaviors among public secondary school students, providing a basis for informed interventions and policy recommendations.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to investigate the environmental factors influencing indecent behaviors among public secondary school students. The specific objectives are:
1. To examine the influence of family background on indecent behaviors among students.
2. To evaluate the role of peer influence in promoting indecent behaviors.
3. To assess the impact of the school environment on student behavior.
4. To determine the contribution of community and societal factors to indecent behaviors.
1.4 Research Questions
The study will address the following research questions:
1. How does family background influence indecent behaviors among public secondary school students?
2. What role does peer influence play in shaping student behavior?
3. In what ways does the school environment contribute to indecent behaviors?
4. How do community and societal factors impact student behavior?
1.5 Significance of the Study
This study is significant for several reasons:
1. Educational Stakeholders: It will provide insights into the environmental factors influencing student behavior, enabling educators and school administrators to develop effective policies and interventions.
2. Parents: The findings will help parents understand their role in shaping their children's behavior and the importance of providing a supportive home environment.
3. Policymakers: The study will offer evidence-based recommendations for designing programs and policies to curb indecent behaviors in schools.
4. Researchers: It will contribute to the body of knowledge on student behavior, serving as a reference for future studies.
1.6 Scope of the Study
This study focuses on public secondary school students in [specific location]. It examines the influence of environmental factors, such as family background, peer relationships, school environment, and community dynamics, on indecent behaviors. The study does not cover private schools or other educational levels, as the challenges and contexts may differ significantly.
1.7 Definition of Key Terms
1. Indecent Behaviors: Actions or conduct that deviate from societal norms, including truancy, substance abuse, bullying, and sexual misconduct.
2. Environmental Factors: External influences from the family, peers, school, and community that shape individual behavior.
3. Public Secondary Schools: Government-funded schools that provide education to students in the secondary level of learning.
