ABSTRACT
Needless to say that money, as it is seen in the society today, has become the basic source of all social vices throughout the world. The society holds money to the highest esteem, it has become a thin god and it is being worshiped as such. As a result of this, many people have gone astray in search of wealth. Almost everybody wants to make money by all means hence it is the only factor that secures self confidence and gives a sense of belonging in the contemporary society. Therefore, it is only but normal for money to become a central theme of a number of French literary works (Molière L’avare, Maupassant Bel Ami, Balzac Eugénie Grandet et Le père Goriot) and in African literature (Sembène Ousmane‟s Le mandate, Margaret Kwakwa‟s L’argent ne fait pas le Bonheur). Our topic: „‟Le pouvoir de l‟argent à travers Topaze de Marcel Pagnol et Knock de Jules Romains‟‟, 20th century French playwrights examines, through the help of sociological and thematic approaches, the domineering power of money and its effect in our society. The findings show that both Marcel Pagnol and Jules Romains depict money in Topaze and Knock respectively as a dynamic force, directing the activities of characters in the plays, being thus an instrument of power, transforming human being into something else. Both authors equally depict the corrupting influence of money as well as the destructive power money can wield over people causing tragedies for both theatrical heroes. Evil triumphs over good in both, leaving the spectators to ponder on both authors‟ message of incompatibility of money and moral.
