ABSTRACT
This study on the assessment of provision and maintenance of school plant in secondary schools in Zaria Education Zone Kaduna State, was conducted to examine the adequacy in the provision and maintenance of school plant facilities. Anomalies in the quality and adequacy of school plant facilities in most secondary schools in Zaria Education Zone have been observed. This is to include lack of teaching facilities, inadequate learning facilities, lack of games and recreational facilities, lack of welfare facilities, etc. The inadequacies of these facilities are believed to have effect not only on teaching and learning process but also students' performance. The purpose of the study is to find out the state of school plant facilities in Zaria Education Zone and the frequency and impact of maintenance carried out on the facilities by school administrators. The aim and objective of the study is to assess the provision and maintenance of school plant in secondary schools in Zaria Education Zone, Kaduna State, Nigeria with a view to making recommendations. Significantly, this study is believed to assist in Education planning and budgeting process in Kaduna State and contribute to the wealth of knowledge. The review of related literature was made based on conceptual framework. Some of the concepts considered include; provision, maintenance of teaching facilities, learning facilities, games and recreational facilities and welfare facilities. The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population comprised 1436 Teachers, 46 Principals and 35 Staff of Ministry of Education in Zaria Education Zone. A sample size of 380 respondents, which represents 25% of the population was used to administer a self designed 80-item questionnaire. The instrument was validated through a pilot study that involved the administration of Thirty Eight (38) copies of questionnaire on the respondents which were all teachers from four secondary schools and reliability coefficient computed at 0.729. The purpose of the pilot study was to determine the reliability of the instrument. Eight research questions were raised and eight hypotheses guided the study. Data were analyzed using means, standard deviation and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that school facilities in the secondary schools in Zaria Education Zone are generally in a state of dilapidated. The findings revealed that school plant facilities were provided and maintained. Conclusions drawn include that school plant facilities should be regularly provided and maintained to enhance effective teaching and learning process. Finally, it is recommended that teaching, learning, game and recreational and welfare facilities are needed for effective teaching and learning process to take place. Consequently, government should provide these facilities and the funds for maintenance while principals should maintain the school plant facilities provided
