ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research work is to determine the Effect of Class Size on the Listening Comprehension Performance of Primary Five (5) Pupils is Zaria Local Government Area of Kaduna State. In order to do this, one hundred and twenty (120) pupils were selected for small and large class sizes from one hundred and eighteen (118) public primary schools in Zaria Local Government Area. To effectively carry out the study, three (3) listening skills (listening to write down main points, listening to carryout instructions, listening and not -taking) were designed along with research questions and corresponding hypotheses. The hypotheses sought to test whether or not there was a significant difference in the performance of primary five (5) pupils on the listening kills in small and large classes. T-test was used to test possible significant difference between pupil's performances before and after the experiment. One of the findings of the study indicate that performances of pupils in small and large class sizes on the three (3) listening skills, depend on the teaching approach used by the teacher. Recommendations were made based on the findings which include that, teachers should provide various experiences for pupils during listening skills in small and large classes such as varying teaching methods that encourage much interactions, discussion and learner participation. There is also the need to group pupils in large classes and create good sitting arrangements to enable each pupils participate in the listening lessons.
