A STUDY OF NAFAQAH (MAINTENANCE) APPLICATION AS AN ISLAMIC SOCIAL SECURITY SYSTEM IN NORTHERN NIGERIA

This present study investigated the practice of Islamic Social Security
System with special reference to Nafaqah (Maintenance) in some states of
Northern Nigeria. A researcher designed questionnaire was administered
to 1104 respondents randomly selected from rural and urban communities
of Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Niger and Sokoto states. Eight (8) null
hypotheses and eight (8) research questions were analysed. 25 items were
generated in the questionnaire using summative rating scale of 1 to 5
response scale. The test statistics chi square (X2) was used to
determine the level of significance at 5%. The result revealed that
there is significant difference between the practice of Nafaqah among
Rural Muslims and Urban Muslims. Findings also revealed that there
exists significant difference between the practice of Nafaqah among
those Muslims who acquired Western Education and those who acquired
Islamic Education in the selected states of Northern Nigeria. Findings
from the study also showed a significant difference between the practice
of Muslims who acquired both Western and Islamic Education and those
who acquired Islamic education in the selected States of Northern
Nigeria. Results of the findings revealed that there is significant
difference between the practice of Nafaqah among Muslims who acquired
both Western and Islamic Education and those who acquired only Western
Education in some States of Northern Nigeria. The research findings
showed that there is a significant difference between the practice of
urban Muslims who acquired Western Education and their counterparts that
acquire Islamic Education in the selected States of Northern Nigeria.
The research also revealed that there exists a significant difference
between the practice of those urban Muslims who acquired both Western
and Islamic Education and those Urban Muslims that acquired Islamic
Education in the selected States of Northern Nigeria. The result of the
findings revealed that there is significant difference in the practice
of Nafaqah between the Rural Muslims that acquired both Western and
Islamic Education, and their rural counterpart who only acquired Islamic
Education in the selected States of Northern Nigeria. The results also
revealed that there is significant difference between the practice of
Nafaqah among the Rural Muslims that acquired both Islamic and Western
Education and those Urban Muslims who acquired both Western and Islamic
Education. Most of the Islamic Welfare institutions practice Nafaqah by
way of feeding. Not much has been achieved by Islamic Welfare
Institutions in the areas of clothing and shelter.
