ABSTRACT

Translation is an indispensable tool to the active participation and survival of any society in the global village known for its linguistic and cultural dynamism yet to be fully explored. As a discipline at the service of humanity, translation remains indubitably a medium by which language is practiced, as it entails re-expressing into a target language a message understood from a source language, reflecting the style and tonality of the message. Hence the need for the need for the translator to be versatile not only with the principles and processes of the practice of translation, but also with the genius of the languages involved. This study therefore aims at discussing the stylistic challenges of literary translation in order to highlight the stakes and difficulties surrounding the production or reproduction of style by the translator. It seeks to discuss the problems of translation, literary translation most importantly, in the light of the unavoidable semantic nuances and stylistic ambiguities. Our research sought to analyze few translation theoretical frameworks and we tried to prove the point that interpretative approach is essential to literary translation. The translator of literary texts must unravel not just what the author intends to say. It is in this perspective that stylistic interpretation of literary works constitutes one of the most pertinent challenges of the practice of translation. Style is difficult to interpret owing to polysemy and semantic ambiguity. To buttress our claims, we attempted to translate some extracts of Chaque chose en son temps into English and we tried to analyze the possible shades of options and their stylistic implications. Our translation was facilitated by the technical and non-technical translation procedures of Vinay and Darbelnet, which we found imperative to translating activity. Consciously or unconsciously translators of literary texts make use of these procedures either in viii their attempt to interpret the style of the original text or to create a style that suits the cultural context of the target language. Our research has been able to establish on one hand the fact that style-related problems in literary translation account for most poor translation and invariably justify the reason for the seeming dread young translators show vis-à-vis literary texts. On the other hand, we arrived at the fact that surmounting stylization problems in literary translation depends to a large extent on the ability of the translator to approach the text with scrutiny; bringing into sharp relief all pertinent meanings and finding the equivalences to interpret them in the way that they concur with the cultural realities of the target language.
