ABSTRACT
This study titled ‘The study of the syntaxic functions of prepositions in ron’ is based on the grammar of the ron language. Ron is a minority language, just as other minority languages in Nigeria which is not well known and well documented. For this reason, it needs to be studied. The study focuses on the grammatical roles prepositions play in the ron language using the prepositions of French as a guide. For better understanding, the work is divided in five chapters. Chapter one examines the research problem, research objectives, justification and the scope and delimitations of the study. Chapter two focuses on the literature review. The few works done on ron language are also discussed. Chapter three examines the methodology of the study. Here, the methods for collection of data and the methods for analyzing the data collected are discussed. Chapter four discuses the prepositions in ron language. The chapter also focuses on the differences and the similaries between French prepositions and preposition in ron language. Chapter five focuses on the conclusion of the study. Here, some recommendations are also given. It was discovered that prepositions in ron play a variety of roles ranging from; linking words and/or group of words through acting as various complements to the verbs of ron language: complement of manner, complement of time, complement of place, complement of company. Just as prepositions in French, the prepositions in ron are placed before the complements they introduce, except one preposition ‘kwa’ which is placed after the complement. In addition, it was discovered that prepositions in ron are very economical in nature, that is, they are few in number, but one preposition can have different meanings, unlike the French prepositions which though economical, but not as economical as the ones in ron language.
