ABSTRACT
Human beings, unlike machines do not have replaceable spare parts as such, the need forrest becomes necessary after the hustle and bustle of modem day living. The resultant tourism, although a global economic phenomenon, is still at infancy on these shores, as the few destinations are seriously degraded through human activities. This thesis seeks to develop a tourist's destination, (Holiday Camp) which will have harmonious array of physical and cultural facilities through Eco design approach. The emphasis here is to explore Ecological principles, which advocate for reduction in environment degradation from human activities. Conservation and preservation of physical landscape, as well as, the use of environmentally friendly materials, with less embodied energy for the cultural facilities will be employed. Dadin Kowa dam site, a potential tourists destination but lacking in complimenting facilities is laying waste with few daily visitors as in picnics and sight seers, its accessibility and physical elements notwithstanding. The thesis examines leisure and recreation as basis for tourism with Eco Design Approach, which aims at sustainability. Concepts, camps and principles of Ecological Design, which have the potential to increase the quality of the environment to sustainability, will promote tourism in the state and the country.Case studies of similar destinations with Eco-sensitivity were examined and conclusions drawn, this influenced the proposal of facilities that will cater for various tourists needs. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are put forward towards achieving a conducive tourists destination with non-conflicting elements through preservation of existing physical elements while introducing Eco-friendly cultural elements.
