ABSTRACT
Man's needs for Healthcare can not be over emphasized. For man to be able to achieve his desired goals, he needs a sound and healthy body and mind. Economic, Social, Political and Cultural Progress of man moves hand in hand with his State of health. This made health care to be the right of every Individual irrespective of race, colour or religion. Hospitals are institutions which provide Medical services to ensure or meet the health needs of a community. The professionals who work with the equipment found in hospitals try to restore health to sick and injured people, while at the same time preventing the out break of diseases. Generally, Hospital buildings are permanent hence difficult to charge once they have been built. However, the methods of treating Nursing and looking after patients charge continuously due to increasing development in medical Science. Also, due to difficulty in securing enough Nurses and trained Medical personnel, the problem of Nursing relatives arose. These Nursing relatives are relatives of patients who stay in hospitals with a view to nursing their sick ones and meeting their daily needs, which include feeding, Washing patients' effects and keeping them company among others. This lead to the overcrowding of the hospitals, and the fact that there Relatives were not catered for in the design of hospitals, made them to gradually turn hospital corridors into their waiting areas, laundries, e.t.a. To this end this thesis looked at the factors responsible for causing the problem and put forth a design proposal, which was aimed at improving support services in a hospital. The design, which has based on effective functional grouping of the various Units of the general hospital, took the Nursing relatives away from the hospital corridors. It provided for the relatives certain facilities, which could be used by them and their patients. Such as toilets, awaiting area and a sit out. The design is in form of a pavilion hospital with a radial concept to ensure maximum balance of the various buildings.
