ABSTRACT
This study entails an evaluation of the characteristics of worktrips of a model Nigerian municipality, Kaduna metropolis. It was found that, on the average, 20% of the monthly income of low income earners is expended on worktrips and the average length of travel is more among this group than for high income earners. Comparatively, the mean monthly expenditure of all groups on rent exceeds the average proportion of income spent on worktrips. Vehicle ownership among the sampled group of workers is 26%. This includes cars, motorcycles and bicycles. About 70% of the workers live in rented houses, 19% own houses and 2% live as secondary tenants. The worker's most popular mode of travel to work is the public transport Tminibusl. Unfortunately, there is no well organised mass transit system. The only form of public transport system is run by private operators and it inefficient overcrowded and offers a limited access. These problems evolved out of urban sprawl and uncontrolled developments in both the core and periphery, lack of adequate maintenance of the road network and the current global economic recession.
