ABSTRACT
Nyam, Bitrus Bin, Determination of the Amount of Dye Extracted from Plants and Examination of Their Fastness Propertie s to Cotton Fabrics. Master of Arts in Industria l Design, September, 1985, 141pp., 16 Plates, 3k reference titles. The problem of this study is to investigat e the extent to which dyes can be extracted from plants as well, as examining their fastness propertie s to cotton fabrics. The purposes of the study ar e to determine ways and the amount of dyes that can be extracted from plants, the effects of geographical environment, mordants and water on plant dye. Throe dye plants, bixa, turmeric (gangamau, magina) and onion skins (albasa) were selected. Also selected were tap and well water and six types of mordants, wood ash, copper, chrome, iron, ti n and alum. The data for this study were obtained by raising the temperature of the dyebath and mordant bath to boiling point and room temperatures fo r 5 to 120 minutes. From the analysis of data, it is conclusive that: 1. Extraction of dye is made by boiling the dye material for 30 minutes. 2. 20 grams of bixa and turmeric are each capable of producing 1.5 grams and 2.7 grams respectively, while 20 grams of onion skin s produce 150ml. of dye solution. 3. Geographical environment of plant dye is only significant as a result of mordant. 4 . Effect of water on plant dye depends on the plant and mordant used. 5. No significance difference is observed in colour between room and boiling point temperature mordanting. 6, Mordants help in varying the colour of the same dye plant as well as making the colour fast .
