Abstract
The purpose of the study was to assess the determinants influencing utilization of school health care services among senior secondary schools in Kano State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study'ïÂ’ex post facto research design was used for this study.Multistage sampling procedurewas used which included stratified random sampling technique was used for the study. The sample of the study was drawn through stratification of forty four(44) L.G.A. of Kano State in to 3 senatorial districts. Simple random sampling was used to select the sample L.G.A. from 3 senatorial districts, the proportionate sample technique was used to select requirednumber of respondents at each of the senior secondary school selected for the study.500copies of questionnaire wasdistributed to respondents and 498(99.6%) copies filled and retured. However two (2.04) percent copies of questionnaire was not used. Descriptive statistic of frequency was used to describe the demographic information of the respondents while means and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions.t. test was used to test hypothesis 1, 2, and 3 at P<0.05 level of significant. The findings of this study revealed that availability of medical services was a significant determinant influencing utilization of school health services among senior secondary school students in Kano State (P = 0.000). Availability of health counselling services was a significant determinant influencing utilization of school health services among senior secondary school students in Kano State (P = 0.000). Availability of equipment was a significant determinant influencing utilization of school health services among senior secondary school students in Kano State (P = 0.000). From the findings of this study, it was concluded that availability of medical health services, health counselling services and health-equipment were determinants influencing utilization of school health care services among senior secondary school students in Kano State. Based on the conclusion recommended that effort should be made towards provision of medical health services in all the senior secondary schools across the state towards effective utilization by students. Stakeholders should ensure that professional health counsellors are recruited into secondary schools to provide a health counselling to students .The state and other stakeholders of senior secondary schools in the state should improve on the provision of health-related equipment to encourage effective utilization of health services by students in the state senior secondary schools.
