MARRIED FEMALE STUDENTS’ VALUES ON FAMILY ACTIVITIES

ABSTRACT

The study was carried out on married female students’ values on family activities in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria. Survey Research design was adopted for the study. Six research questions and five null hypotheses were raised. The population of the married female students was 1,645 and the sample size was 167. Simple random sampling technique was used for selecting the sample. The data collected were analyzed using frequency, means and percentages. t-test and Chisquare were used to test null hypotheses. The main findings were that, academic demand is number one factor affecting married female student’s household activities. In addition, the test of null hypotheses revealed that, there was significant difference in the views of married undergraduates and postgraduates on the factors affecting activities most preferred by married female students, postgraduate married female students were of the view that academic demand is the main factor affecting household activities while undergraduate married female students agreed that influence of friends and associates is the main factor affecting household activities and there was no significant relationship between married female students’ values on household chores related to foods and nutrition. The findings of this study show that academic demand, influence of friends and associates, amount of time and energy already consumed on other activities affects the household activities of married female students. Married female students value household chores related to foods and nutrition and home management because of good health, married female students value household chores related to clothing and textiles because of comfort, married female students value household chores related to child care and development because of family health that they provide and married female students values on household chores differ from actual participation on the activities. Among the major recommendations, were that housekeepers should be trained by individuals, Home Economists, NGO and Governments so that they can be employed by families as housekeepers.
