ASSESSMENT OF HEALTH WORKERS JOB SATISFACTION AND ITS EFFECT ON HEALTH CARE PROVISION IN A TERTIARY HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT

Health workers are known to be highly mobile, this movement of health workers most times result in financial loss and weakens health systems in the countries of origin mostly developing countries. This study’s aimed to find out job satisfaction and its effect on health care provision.A cross sectional descriptive study design was used and 207 respondents selected using stratified sampling technique. The study population comprised health workers employed by Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria.The questionnaire used was an adoption of Job satisfaction survey. Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS version 19) was used for analysis. Data was summarized using frequency tables and graphic presentations. Chi-square test was used to test for association between the predictor variables and the outcome variable. P-value was set at P ≤ 0.05. Binary logistic regression was computed to determine the size of the predictor variables on the dependent variable. The mean age of respondents was 35 years ±8 SD, mean years of service was 6.5845 ± 8.43544 SD, and mean hours of work per week was 43.4106± 9.17312 SD. Most of the respondents were within the age group 30-39, and 45% of the respondents were doctors. The overall job satisfaction was 71.5%, while co-worker job satisfaction was 59.4%. All the associations between components of Job satisfaction and Job satisfaction were statistically significantly. Age and Income had positive effect on Job satisfaction as shown by the odds ratio (Exp B) of one.Most of the health workers were happy with their jobs, this study found that of all the facets examined only age and income had a positive effect on job satisfaction. From this finding the management of ABUTH can improve job satisfaction and workers productivity by increasing remunerations and employing older workers.
