ABSTRACT
The Comparisonof Speed, cost and^accuracv of traversing usinq EDM, ODM and Steel tape A built-up area (Faculty of Enqineerinq) within the Ahmadi Bello University. Samaru Campus was traversed emplovinq theodolite with three methods of linear measurements. The obiective was to comparatively and statistically analyse the computed results of each of the three methods, in terms of speed, cost and accuracy. The anqular measurements were made with theodolite and linear measurements were separately made with Steel tape, EDM (Eldi-1) and ODM (Self-reducinq tacheometer ) . The analyses of the results were done with regards to parameter of time for speed, manpower involved, equipment cost, overhead charqes etc were used for costing, and jr accuracy; the relative accuracy was the parameter used. Also, investiqations into dependency of time and method; cost and method; and accuracy and method were carried out. The results showed that EDM has the highest cost and best accuracy, ODM has the shortest time and Steel tape is the cheapest and slowest of the three methods. Hence, for high accuracv work, (over 1/20000). measurements of short or loner lines; EDM is recommended. For low order works (< 1/5000) . ODM should be used and Steel tape is recommended for accuracies greater than 1/5000, and on gentle topography.
