ABSTRACT
This research has been on the Comparative Analysis of the Islamic Ethical Values in the Sokoto Caliphate and the Contemporary Northern Nigeria. It is observed that moral and ethical degeneration have re-emerged among a significant number of the contemporary Muslims in the Northern Nigeria, the domain where the Sokoto Caliphate exercised its rules based on the Islamic provisions. Some of the life styles of the contemporary Muslims in the Northern Nigeria are to a large extent devoid of ethics and value orientation. Thus, it is part of the objectives of this research to investigate and find out the ethical values that guided the Sokoto Caliphate. In the literature review of this research, efforts were essentially geared towards discussing ethical values that guided the Sokoto Caliphate in its political, social and economic activities so as to serve as lessons to the contemporary Muslims in the Northern Nigeria. Moreso, there were concerted efforts made in an attempt to prove the Truth or otherwise of the colonialist and Orientalists assertion that the Sokoto Jihad Movement was motivated by racial and economic factors and to some extent by political factor. In addition, there was also an attempt to prove the truth or otherwise of the assumption raised in the chapter one of this research that "The Sokoto Caliphate was guided by some ethical values in its political, social and economic life.' In the process of carrying out this research work, some major findings were made that would prove significant to the life-styles of the contemporary Muslims particularly in the areas of ethics and values. The importance of ethics and values and the need for every society to decide its values based on its norms and cultures have been found and confirmed in this research. This research essentially found out that the Sokoto Caliphate was guided by some cardinal values which helped it to achieve the objectives for which the Caliphate was established. These cardinal values include among others the following: high moral standard, teaching and learning, Sufism, women education, brotherhood etc. It was also found that moral values and education played the leading vital role in deciding who should be a leader in the Sokoto Caliphate as against what operates among the contemporary Muslims. And finally some recommendations were made in this research among which includes the introduction of a course by Islamic Studies Departments in higher institutions of learning (both at undergraduate and postgraduate level) that will introduce the students to the ethical values in Sokoto Caliphate.
