ABSTRACT
Nigeria produces cotton seed and groundnut in abundance, especially in the northern part. This project Gusau Oil Mills aims at designing a factory for processing these oil seeds. In the process of doing this, more products will be realized and wastage will be minimized. The sub topic is Architectural considerations to hygiene in Industries. This has to do with ventilation, waste disposal and workers' welfare. A conducive environment promotes productivity as we11 as safety. This research work touches industrial hygiene, sources of hygiene problems namely chemical, air, machines, microorganisms, wastes and storage. Control principles are ventilation, substitution and Isolation. Other factors are industrial stress, first aid, waste disposal and industrial comfort. For a better understanding of the problem, analysis of existing oil mill was carried out and attention was focused on hygiene considerations. The production processes are seed cleaning, delinting and decortication for cotton seeds, crushing of groundnut, solvent extraction, cooking or frying, pressing, refining and packaging. Different units in oil mill are mentioned in this research work; they are main production hall, raw material and finished product stores, solvent extraction units, refinery, workers' facilities and administrative block. Also, the VI economic survey of Gusau and site description are mentioned. Finally, a full description of the main raw materials (cotton seed and groundnut) is given. This includes the seasons of harvesting and planting, diseases and pests, water, soil type, transportation, storage, and precautions.
