ABSTRACT
It is said that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation'. The wealth of the nation is in the health oF its human resources. This health is managed or treated by hospitals, clinics and other medical institutions, when it has been impaired (either permanently or temporary) by any form of illness or disease. The health needs of the society are influenced by many factors such as increased sophistication in scientific knowledge that is technology and also a simultaneous increase in the population size. Hospitals in the country today especially the public hospital are not presently equipped, to cater for the health needs of the nations populace due to a decay of both functional and physical structures, respectively. This is due to the fact that most of them were built during the colonial era. The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos was built during that era, at the time of the second world war as a rehabilitation center for the returnee war veterans whom had all forms of traumatic and orthopaedic injuries. It has since being upgraded to hospital status by the Federal Government. This hospital which acts as a referral hospital to other hospitals in the area of orthopaedics management and treatment, has had some of its facilities upgraded haphazardly within its initial layout, in an effort to improve the situation, without proper consideration for inter-departmental relationship, and circulation. The purpose of this thesis work is to propose mainly a redevelopment of the hospital with regards to the above stated reasons and also providing an enabling environment for the recovery of the patient, through the upgrading structurally, of the diagnostic and treatment core and the in-patient core, as these are the two most important areas to a patient in the hospital.
