ABSTRACT
Girl child abuse has been a social problem which confronts girl child especially from a poor family (financially weak families). Such abusive situations in the areas of this study include girl child hawking, labour (work as domestic maid) sexual abuse girl child streets begging and as well as physical abuse such as torture and brutality in form of beating, physical injuries and hunger among others. In the Kano State Hisbah Board, cases of girl child abuse of numerous forms were recorded in 2012 and included sexual abuse, torture and brutality. This study examine the "Teachers and Students opinion on the role of the social studies education towards eradiating girl child abuse in the junior secondary schools. The study Teachers and Students Opinion on the Role of Social Studies Education Towards Eradicating Girl Child Abuse in Junior Secondary School in Kano State. The study used descriptive survey research design and 383 male and female students of JSSII and JSSIII of selected from six junior secondary schools was used, with 109 social studies teachers. Simple random sampling technique was used to select students? and teachers samples. The study used social studies education questionnaire on girl-child abuse (SOSEQGCA) as data collection instrument developed by the researcher based on the research objective and research questions. The study answered three (3) research questions and tested three (3) null hypotheses. The data analysis tools were independent t-test sample, mean and standard deviation. However, all the null hypotheses tested at 0.05 alpha were retained with the exception of hypothesis number one. The study revealed that there was no significant difference on account of gender and study level among the respondents on the Role of Social Studies Education towards Eradicating Girl Child Abuse in Junior Secondary School in Kano State. The study revealed that the students and teachers have positive views on the ability of social studies education as a core course offered by all students at junior secondary schools to eradicate Girl Child Abuse in Junior Secondary School in Kano State. In the light of the above findings the study recommended in-service training for social studies teachers to refurbish their knowledge, the need for adequate time for social studies lessons in the school times table, the need for recruitment of well motivated and qualified social studies teachers etc.
