ABSTRACT
This study examined the effect of Social Skills Training (SST) and Transactional Analysis (TA) Counselling Techniques on Social Withdrawal Behaviour (SWB) among secondary school students in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Nigeria. This study adopted quasi experimental design involving pretest - posttest control group. Six (6) objectives with corresponding research questions and hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study consisted of socially withdrawn year 2 students in the Government Secondary Schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample size of sixty (60) students. The 60 participants were assigned into three groups of two experimental groups and control group with 20 in each group. The instrument used for selection was Social Withdrawal Checklist (SWC), while main instrument Social Withdrawal Questionnaire (SWQ) adapted and modified by the researcher was used for data collection. The data collected from the study were analyzed using One-way Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) to determine the proportion of the variance of the criterion which exists before treatment and what was obtained after. The findings from result revealed that SSTCT was significantly effective in reducing both moderate and high levels of SWB among Senior Secondary School students; it also revealed that TACT was effective in the reduction of moderate and high levels of SWB among Senior Secondary School students. It also revealed that both SSTCT and TACT are relatively effective in reducing moderate and high levels of SWB among secondary school students. It also revealed that SSTCT was more effective compared to TACT. Based on the findings, it was concluded that both SSTCT and TACT are effective treatment technique in reducing SWB students. The researcher recommended that the school Counsellors, Psychologists and Social Workers should endeavour to make use of both SSTCT and TACT in the treatment of SWB among Secondary school students.
