ABSTRACT
The objective of this study has been to identify the problems confronting the fertilizer distribution programme, and fertilizer use in Gongola State of Nigeria. To obtain the data necessary for this study, 152 farmers, both users and non-users of fertilizers from six villages in three Local Government Areas, 20 contract transporters of fertilizers, 15 extension workers, and nine store-keepers/ attendants were interviewed. The study shows that problems facing the fertilizer distribution programme include transportation bottlenecks, absence of storage facilities at the village level, poor records of fertilizer inventory, dearth of trained manpower, use of extension staff to distribute fertilizers, administrative delays, unavailability of complementary inputs and farmers lack of knowledge about them and high fertilizer distribution costs. The major reasons cited for non-use and low level of use of fertilizers were cash constraints, non-availability of fertilizers especially at the time required, distance from fertilizer stores, lack of knowledge of how to use fertilizers. cost of applying fertilizers and the unavailability of complementary inputs. Statistical analysis (Multiple linear stepwise regression technique) of the relationship between the non-use and low level of use of fertilizers, and some socio-economic variables was Done. The results show that. income level, number of seasons of fertilizer use, distance to fertilizer distance to fertilizer stores, means of fertilizer transportation from stores, frequency of extension contacts, membership of farmers' cooperative unions and availability of fertilizers were significant in affecting fertilizer use. In addressing the afore mentioned problems, therefore, the promotion of the application of fertilizers in recommended quantities, and the use of improved management practices are of paramount importance in the production of an adequate food supply for Gongola State and the nation as a whole.
