ABSTRACT The study was undertaken with the main objective of evaluating the analysis of socioeconomic characteristics of poultry(layer) production in two local government areas of Kaduna state. The study examined the socio-economic characteristics of poultry (layer) farmers as it relates to egg production. Structured questionaire were administered to the farmers to gather information on socio-economic activities, marketing and labour. The regression analysis were based on variables such as years of experience, level of education, level of income, cooperative participation, age of farmers and sex of farmers, inputs level of production and productivity, using analytical techniques such as descriptive statistics, farm budgeting analysis (gross margin analysis) and production function analysis. The analyses were hypothesized that: 1. There is no relationship between the production (output) and socio-economic characteristics of the poultry keepers. 2. Poultry (layer) business is not profitable The result showed that socio-economic characteristics were related to productions, though level of education, cooperative participation and age of farmers were not significant, but year of experience, level of income and sex of the farmers were significant at 5, 1 and 10%, respectively. While in the production analysis there was no significant in feed used, but labour and flock population were at 5 and 1%, respectively. The result also showed that the poultry (layer) business is a very profitable business when properly managed and well supervised.
