ABSTRACT

Embroiders in Wudil are engaged in a new phase of production for global markets, though the process is too slow. Embroidery training system in Wudil should use new methods of organization since the demand for the product has created challenges to the system. The objectives set out for this research were basically on the organizational structure, training, materials and problems of the embroiders. Basically, questionnaire was the instrument used in collecting data and analyzed data are presented in table according to the objectives. It was found that hierarchy exists within the embroiders industry and the system of training is informal. most of the training is done while walking for the master who help the apprentices learned their trade or profession, in exchange for their continued labour for an agreed period after they have achieved measurable competences. Sometimes it is a kind of transfer of learning from father to son. Embroiders at Wudil have working materials available and each labour is associated with a particular material. For tailoring, the materials are essentially sewing machine and scissors. Embroider needs needle and threads, designers requires ruler, biro, nail, cardboard among others, while pressers need wooden handle and a trunk of tree where they spread the gown for beating. Embroidery as a trade, eradicate unemployment and provide numerous opportunities. It plays a significant role in the development of the economy of a country. The artisans also encounter problems especially with the marketing and the economy. Recommendations were offered by the researcher. The organization and administration of Wudil embroidery industry need to be restructured so that experienced and skilled craftsmen are given the opportunity to head the centre. It is recommended that government should open similar embroidery centres (but formalized) in other parts of Wudil to provide access for school learners to learn the craft.
