ABSTRACT
The utmost purpose of this research is to examine and reconstruct the

role of Olufunmilayo Ransome Kuti as a politician and how she has

impacted into the development of Nigeria, bringing to light her political

activities in the emancipation of Nigeria for independence.

Women have been involved in politics in History. They held leadership

positions for instance Queen Amina of Zazzau, Queen Kombassa of Bonny

Kingdom etc. Some women also held political offices such as the Office of

the Iyalode in Yoruba land, Magira in Kanuri land, Sonai in Nupe land. Such

offices were created for them to be participants in the political process and to

attend to socio-economic needs of their communities. As a matter of fact,

they have been a formidable force in contributing to the development of the

socio-economic sectors. Thus, women have been part of the development

process of their communities whether recognized or not, as many literature

tend to concentrate on the achievement of men.

The purpose of this research is to examine the cognate role of

Olufunmilayo Ransome Kuti and her enormous contributions to the political

development of Nigeria. Her struggle with other nationalists for the

independence of Nigeria is very crucial to the history of Nigeria.

Importantly, her political achievements have broken the barrier set against

women in politics. Her belief in a united Nigeria has also motivated her

actions for the development of the country
