AN ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS STUDY HABIT AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE IN ENUGU EDUCATIONAL ZONE OF ENUGU STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the assessment of students’ study habits and academic performance in literature and English language in Enugu Educational Management Zone of Enugu State. Four specific purposes and four research question guided the study. The structured questionnaire was the instrument used to obtain information. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. The population of the study comprised 26 Government Secondary Schools in Enugu Education Zone of Enugu State with 13,462 students. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 100 Senior Senior Secondary School Students for the study. The instrument used was face validated by three experts, two from the Department of Social Science and one from the Department of Edm / English language, all from the African Thinkers Community of Inquiry College of Education Enugu State. The findings showed that students hate to read, students played a lot after school, students watched television at home after school, most family background affect students study habits, the health condition of a student affect his or her study habit. It was recommended that home teachers should be employed, parents should set a designated study space for each child, and teachers should improve in their teaching method to help improve in the study habit.
