ABSTRACT

It was estimated that about 70% of Nigeria's population live in rural areas, therefore no government can afford to leave these areas undeveloped. As a result of this, various programmes were introduced to develop agriculture which is the mainstay of rural economy as well as to raise the living standard of our rural population. However, most of these programmes were reported to have recorded limited successes in their implementations. This has been attributed to their poor planning, formulation and execution. This thesis is on the contributions of Sokoto Agricultural and Community Development Project to rural development in Sokoto State. The result of the research reveals that SACDP had succeeded in providing infrastructural facilities, agricultural inputs, credit and investment financing and skills development in its areas of operation. However, it is discovered that untimely funding and failure of funding partners to adequately fund the project are some of the constraints faced by the project. This is compounded by low infrastructural development, illiteracy and poverty in the project areas. Finally, the study proffers recommendations that could enhance the implementation of SACDP and other rural development outfits in Nigeria. The recommendations include depoliticization and continuity of rural development programmes, timely and adequate funding of rural development programmes, collaborative and comprehensive approach to rural development by all tiers of government, rapid enhancement of the socio-economic status of rural dwellers and continous involvement of rural populace in the development of their areas.
