ABSTRACT

This study on the Kaduna State Agricultural Development project and Rural Transformation (A Case Study of Maigana Zone) is an attempt to examine whether the rural development policies provide an avenue to bridge the gap between the rural and urban areas of this country. Also, it tries to find out whether there is nothing positive about the ADP's to warrant government continued patronage. For the purpose of this study both primary and secondary data were collected. The farming households residing within the zone provide the primary data, while the secondary data was obtained from, official documents, written records and past researches. The data obtained were analysed using simple statistics (frequencies and percentages) that were summarized in figures and tables. Results from the study shows that, the Maigana zone of the KADP did well in raising the level of agricultural productivity within the zone during the period covered by the research i.e. (1993 - 98) through the injection of modern farming inputs such as fertilizers, improved seedlings, feticide and also through the provision of social infrastructures such as roads, earth dams, bore holes, and so forth. Based on the conclusion of this study, it is recommended that, programmes should be based on a comprehensive socio-economic study of the community to ensure that programmes are at equilibrium with the nature of that society. Also non-agricultural occupations such as pottery, weaving, blacksmithing e.t.c., should be made part of the programmes of the project. This it was discovered would provide farmers another means of livelihood during the dry season. Again, it is recommended that, rural development programmes should be planned at the regional level within the context of the national development plan. This it was felt, would facilitate the achievement of integrating the rural and urban sectors. But the success of this approach depends on the willingness of the governments to accept the idea of planning. Finally further research on the impact of the ADP's on rural transformation is important so as to bridge the gaps left behind by this study. This would provide new in sight into the usefulness or otherwise of the ADP's in the country in general.
