THE AVAILABILITY AND USE OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS IN TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BASIC TECHNOLOGY IN SECONDARY SCHOOL

ABSTRACTThe study examined the availability and use of instructional materials in teaching and learning of basic technology in secondary schools in Enugu State. Three research questions guided the study. The population of the study was 615 made up of 15 teachers and 600 students of basic technology in Enugu North L.G.A. The study used simple random sampling technique to select 10 teachers and 400 students from the five (5) selected secondary schools. The study adopted survey research design and a 20 item structured questionnaire developed base on 5- point rating scale by the researcher was used for data collection for the study. The data collected was analyzed using arithmetic mean and standard deviation. The instrument was validated by the project supervisor and other two experts in the department of vocational education, NAU, Awka, Anambra state.
The study revealed that instructional materials are not available for teaching and learning of basic technology in Enugu North, Audio-visual materials are not utilized in teaching and learning basic technology. Based on the findings of the study the following recommendations were made that government should make available all the necessary instructional materials to aid basic technology teachers in teaching and learning and teacher should be encouraged to make use of available instructional materials for effective teaching and learning of basic technology and all these will enhance the teaching and learning of basic technology.
