Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Akio Morita, co-founder and chairman of Sony Corporation, epitomizes Japan's postwar technological rise. He credits his interest in electronics to his mother's passion for Victrola recordings of European music. With assistance from Time magazine's Tokyo bureau-chief Reingold and Japanese journalist Shimomura, Morita chronicles the growth of Sony, beginning with a basic tape recorder he constructed in the ruins of wartime Tokyo. Determined to transform the global perception of Japanese goods to signify quality, particularly in the U.S. where he set up a subsidiary, he took pride in seeing Sony products imitated by international competitors. Morita maintains the disciplined mindset from his Japanese education but has also embraced aspects of Western culture. He contrasts the Japanese approach to employee relations, which is familial and long-term, with the U.S. approach, which he criticizes for being litigious, impatient, and often inflexible. He advocates for trade liberalization on both sides as a solution to the global economic crisis. Photos not seen by PW.
