ABSTRACT
Five growth studies and an ME study were performed to study the effects of replacing 0-80% of the maize fraction in broiler chicken diets with sorghum beer residue (SBR), The ME of the residue was determined to he 1764kcal/kg. The results of feeding trials obtained indicated that weight gains, feed efficiency were depressed with increasing levels of maize replacement. Feed consumption was increased in some trials and decreased in others while mortality was unaffected by varying levels of replacement. Feed cost kg gain was lowered in all the S.B.R, containing diets. The adverse effects of the sorghum beer residue was more pronounced in the younger (0-6 weeks) than in the older (6-9 weeks) birds. The results suggest that up to 50% of the maize can be replaced in broiler starter diets and 40% in finisher diets with S.B.R. The effects of sorghum beer residue on the carcass characteristic were also evaluated. The weights of the liver gut, gizzard as well as caecal and intestinal lengths were compared in all the treatments as well as the dressing percentage. The results indicated that there are specific modifications of the alimentery canal to enable the bird handle the high fibre Sorghum Beer Residue diets
