ABSTRACT
This study investigated the marital problems experienced by married students in Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Federeal Polytechnic, Bauchi, and Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi. Questiannaire was used to collect data. The Questionnaire contained forty - eight (48) items, divided into sections A - J, which covered the major areas of marital problems. It followed the Likert - type attitude/opinion model in which responses were arranged on quantifiable levels (1 -5 points) the areas covered include: interpersonal relationship, decision - making, sex, religion, economic management, in laws interference, children, general home life and academic issues. Descriptive design was employed for the purpose of this study. A sample of 170 married students of both males and females was used out of the total of 1,703 married students. Data collected were analysed using Analysis of Variance and percentages. There were eight null hypotheses formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Null hypotheses 1,3, 5,6,7 and 8 were rejected and 2,4 were retained. The findings revealed that married students experience marital problems involving interpersonal relationship and decision - making, religion, in-laws interference, children, general home life and academic matters. These problems are perceived as having effects in their performances in academic work. As regards counseling needs, the findings showed that Academic issues (23.53%), Interpersonal Relationship and Decision Making (13.53%), and Economic Management (12.94%) among others, were ranked 1,2 and 3 respectively, indicating areas of emphasis in the
